The attention of the two passengers who had come out onto the deck was the only thing preventing the ferry crewman from giving the madman lying on the back deck a very acerbic piece of his mind. Having tempered his urge to swear at the man for giving him the fright of his life, he went to help him up. It was only then that he noticed the blood on the deck.

'Sorry, mate,' Conor said as he sat up. Pain shot through his side and he gasped, then tried to turn it into a laugh. 'I had to get away from my mate. He's a bit mad. He found me with his girlfriend.'

'You're bleeding,' the crewman said, pointing to the deck. 'What happened?'

Conor realised the ferry's engine might have muffled the sound of the gunshot. 'My mate threw a knife at me,' he lied, 'and it didn't quite miss. It's only superficial.' He smiled. 'He's not that accurate.'

'I should call the police,' the crewman insisted.

'Don't do that, will you,' Conor pleaded. 'It was my fault, and I don't want to get my mate into trouble. He'll have calmed down by now.'

The crewman hesitated, and Conor held his breath.

'I should call the police and have you fined for jumping onto the ferry the way you did. But I guess if I had someone trying to take a piece out of me, I would have done the same thing,' the crewman grinned. 'But I will be making a full report on this, you know.'

'Thanks, mate,' Conor smiled.

'I'll get the first-aid kit and give you some dressings, and then I'd better clean up that deck.'

As Conor watched the passengers follow the crewman into the cabin, he sagged in relief. Now the adrenaline surge from the chase was ebbing, the pain in his side had intensified. He looked down at his shirt. At his beach house he had changed into the spare clothes he kept there, and had chosen the navy shirt so it couldn't be seen through when he put his gun under it. Now the dark colour helped disguise the extent of the blood stain.
